Set over more than twenty years, Girls Like Funny Boys charts the turbulent adolescence of wannabe comedian Johnny Goodwin through to his troubled modern day fame. 'Johnny's an immature boy who grows into an immature, bitter and guilt-ridden comedian,' Franklin said. 'I was fascinated by the idea of a stand-up who's never seen to be funny, either on or off stage - he's only funny in the sense he's a bit strange. He tries to purify himself through his art, desperate to create something that will live and make up for his real-life failings but, of course, the harder he tries the less amusing he becomes.' Despite its innocuous title and occasional over the top characters, the novel is not a comedy and contains a fair chunk of Franklin's meanest writing. 'Girls Like Funny Boys taps into school life and the way so much of our personality is formed during the awfulness of adolescence. You simply can't forget the people you went through school with, while teenage mistakes can haunt you for decades afterwards.
